Volunteering

Who is a volunteer? Look in the mirror and you will see a potential Mercy Medical Center volunteer. Whether you are a teenager or a retiree; homemaker, student or business person; male or female – Mercy Medical Center needs you to volunteer your time!

At Mercy, we depend on our volunteers! Each month, volunteers serve as an extension of the Mercy Medical Center’s professional staff by providing support services in many ways. Through working in the Mercy Volunteer Program, you can go home knowing you have made a difference in someone’s day with a kind word, smile, action or simply by your presence. In the true sense of volunteerism, members of our program derive great personal satisfaction from knowing they have made a difference at the hospital. Become a volunteer today and make a difference for patients, their families, the community and in your own life.

What Do We Do?
Lifting the spirits of Mercy Medical Center patients is what the volunteer program is all about. Many of our men, women, and students unselfishly donate their time, talents, love and attention to our patients and their families. Volunteers are involved in such activities as escorting patients and visitors throughout the hospital, delivering flowers, mail and gifts. Volunteers visit regularly with refreshments, reading materials, a cheerful smile and a comforting word. Hospital volunteers also provide a valuable source of information for the patients’ families and friends and are especially important when serving as a liaison during crucial times.

Volunteers provide the following:

Who We Are
Since 1951, Mercy Medical Center has enjoyed the services of the Volunteers who have donated hundreds of hours. Our goal is to match your talents and interests with the needs of the medical center. The hospital gift shop opened in 1962, and has become a major fundraising activity of the volunteers. Proceeds from the gift shop, along with the other fund-raising efforts, provide equipment and financial assistance to various departments. Volunteer Services coordinates the activities of three main groups of volunteers: The Auxiliary, Adult Volunteers, and Youth Volunteers.

Auxiliary Volunteers
The Auxiliary is governed by a board and is involved in various fund-raising activities which allow for the purchase of needed equipment. You need not participate in the fund-raising aspects if you so choose. All Auxiliary members volunteer in the hospital; most choosing one 4-hour shift per week.

Adult Volunteers
Comprised of individuals 18 and older, adult volunteers must commit to one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of six months. This commitment provides consistency which benefits both the volunteers and the patient/staff that they serve. Click here to learn more about our Adult Volunteer program.

Youth Volunteers
For students 14 to 17 years of age. Youth work in a variety of areas throughout the medical center. It is particularly helpful for students who are considering a future in the medical field. It is a good opportunity to determine if the hospital is an environment in which you would like to work one day. Click here to learn more about our Youth Volunteer program.
