Lymphedema Services
There are several diagnoses that can result in lymphedema, especially those that often include removal of lymph nodes, and they include:
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Bladder cancer
- Colon cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Lymphoma
- Melanoma
- Hereditary
SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
- Swelling in a specific area
- A sensation of fullness in a limb or tightness of the skin
- Decreased flexibility, pain
- Difficulty fitting into clothing in one specific area of the body
(i.e., arm or leg)
Complete Decongestive Therapy
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is one of the most effective approaches used to treat lymphedema. At Mercy Institute of Rehabilitation, our licensed Occupational Therapist works in close partnership with your physician and is certified in CDT. Treatment can include:
- Specific massage techniques to help move accumulated fluid
- Compression bandaging to prevent re-accumulation of fluid
- Hygiene and skin care to prevent infection
- Exercise to maintain decongestion
- Self-care and maintenance at home
- Compression garments
