A Not-for-Profit Hospital |
||
| Mercy Medical Center is a not-for-profit
hospital. There are many factors that contribute to a hospital being designated
not-for-profit; however, the primary consideration is the hospital's commitment
to serving its community.
Like any business, Mercy must produce more income than expenses in order to remain viable. The difference between Mercy and a for-profit hospital is how its income is used. A for-profit hospital distributes income in excess of expenses (profits) among its shareholders, individuals who often have no other ties to the community their hospital serves. Income earned by not-for-profit institutions, however, is reinvested in and distributed throughout the community. At Mercy, several million dollars each year are used to:
Charity CareOne of Mercy's core strategies is to become a nationally-recognized advocacy force for social justice and systemic change. It's a goal we take very seriously. Of course, the hospital does need to be paid for its services to guarantee future
access to the high quality of healthcare services that the people of Douglas County
deserve. However, when it is impossible for an individual to pay all or part of the
charges, he or she will never be turned away. Mercy has a special charity care program
in place to assist in these circumstances. |
